WHAT IS ISLAM?
Islam is the religion of the Muslims. Islam is a religion of peace, generosity and forgiveness. Muslims believe in one God, in the Day of Judgment and individual accountability for actions done in life. They believe in a chain of prophets beginning with Adam and continued with Noah, Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob Joseph, Job, Moses, David, Solomon and Jesus. God's message was finally reaffirmed by the prophet Muhammad.
Muslims pray at a temple called mosque, the Muslim holy book is the Qur'an, which contains the specific words that God revealed to the Prophet Muhammad, who learned them by heart and then dictated to his companions. Islam is an Arabic word which means submission, derived from another word meaning peace. In the religious context means that Muslims should have a total submission to the will of God. Allah is the Arabic word for God.
MUSLIMS
Only about 20 % of all Muslims live in the Arab world. The country with the largest Islamic population is Indonesia. An estimated seven million Muslims live in America. Your community is composed of people from a wide variety of ethnic and national backgrounds. Islam is one of the fastest growing religions in the United States and the world .
Under Islamic law , women have always had the right to own property , receive an education and take an active part in the life of their community. Men and women are respected on a level of equality. Islamic rules regarding dress modestly , are equal for men and women . Islam requires modesty for women and men. For women , they are required to cover their bodies so that their figure is not disclosed . They should only show their faces and hands. The turban or head cover is called hijab or chador. The long dress that covers abayah called , chador or jilbad . This requirement was designed to protect women and give it the respect it deserves.Women are not required to cover their faces , as observed in some countries in the Middle East.
Some Arab men wear plaid cloth on their heads , called kafiyyeh and is considered traditional, not religious. This attachment is similar to the caps used by some African and African estaounidenses . The kafiyyeh reveals the identity and pride in traditional culture.
Unfortunately , extremist Islamic groups have apparently preached doctrines that have nothing to do with the original teachings of the Koran. Islam teaches that Christians and Muslims are " people of the book " , a term which means that the two religions share the same basic beliefs articulated by the Bible and the Koran . The main difference between Christians and Muslims is that Muslims do not believe Jesus is the Son of God . believe Jesus was a prophet whom God granted him special powers to show people the power of God himself .
Moreover , Islam also teaches that Jews and Muslims are " people of the book " , which in this case means that the two religions share the same beliefs articulated through the Torah and the Koran . The main difference between the two religions is that Jews do not believe in the prophets beyond the Jewish prophets , including Muhammad and his teachings.
